In the Wake of the Fires

21 January 2026

The Avenel and Longwood community experienced devastating bushfires in early 2026. As we work toward a sustainable energy future, these events remind us of the very real impacts of climate change and the importance of community resilience.

​

One of RAE’s founders, Jim Billings, shared his experience of returning to Upton Hill after the fires.

Renewable Energy Avenel (RAE) is a community-led organisation formed in 2020, driven by growing concerns around rising power bills and the environmental impact of fossil fuels. We exist to support residents of Avenel and surrounding areas to transition to cleaner, more affordable renewable energy. By providing education, financial support, and practical projects, we aim to reduce household energy costs while protecting the planet for future generations.
